Marla Malcolm Beck has been Chief Executive Officer of Bluemercury Inc., which she founded, since 1999. She leads Bluemercury’s merchandising, marketing, planning and store operations teams to drive growth and profitability. From 1999 – 2006, she served as Bluemercury Inc.’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. Guided by her passion and belief that beauty clients desired honest, friendly, and expert advice, Beck founded bluemercury in 1999 when she was 29 years old. Bluemercury has nearly 30 locations from coast-to-coast, carries over 60 indulgent beauty brands from around the world, and operates luxurious skin spas with cutting edge, results-oriented treatments at each location.

Bluemercury’s innovative retailing model has been written about in Inc. Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and has been the topic of numerous books, including Shopping: Why We Love It and How Retailers can Create the Ultimate Customer Experience, Be Happy at Work: 100 Women Who Love Their Jobs and Why, and a book set to be published Fall 2010, The Intelligent Entrepreneur. Ms. Beck is often invited to share her retailing, branding, and cosmetics industry expertise. She has appeared as a guest on CNBC, CNN and Fox Business News, and has also been a guest speaker for WWD’s Beauty Innovation Forum, HBA’s Global Beauty Conference, Harvard University’s Luxury Branding and Retail Goods Speaker Series, and Columbia University’s Lang Center for Entrepreneurship’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

Ms. Beck was Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MPA from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a B.A. in Economics, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of California, Berkeley. She is on the Advisory Board of Harvard Business School’s Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and is a member of the Young President’s Organization. She resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with her husband and three children, ages 7, 5, and 3.
