It’s safe to say that REN founders Robert Calcraft and Antony Buck are evangelical about skincare and have been since Antony’s wife developed adverse reactions to almost every skincare product during her first pregnancy.

That experience made them believe that a new approach to skincare was needed, one that would meet the needs of people like Antony’s wife who were increasingly concerned with skin sensitivity and synthetic ingredients but did not want to sacrifice effectiveness, pleasure or aesthetics.

So they set about creating a brand that would offer what they saw as the “holy grail” of skincare - skincare that uses the latest hi-tech bio actives, is free from skin-unfriendly synthetic ingredients and is gorgeously pleasurable to use. They summarized the idea as Clean Bio Active Skincare and called the brand REN.

Having the idea for REN proved the easy bit given how difficult it was to formulate and manufacture products that lived up to their ideal. However, with perseverance and the unfailing enthusiasm and expertise of a brilliant (and slightly mad) French doctor of cosmetic pharmacology, REN began to take shape and, in September 2000, Robert and Antony launched the first ever truly desirable and effective skincare range that was free from synthetic fragrance and colours, petrochemicals, propylene glycol, animal ingredients, PEGs, TEA/DEA, sulfates, silicones and parabens.
